Fast forward to finishing two degrees, meeting some of my best friends, having crazy stressful practicums, falling in and out of love, achieving the dream of my eight -year-old self, waiting out moving from university life on the island back to my home town, subbing every grade in a month, moving back to the island for the summer and then getting a full time class in my home town. A lot happens in four years and a lot changes in four years. This is not to say that going to Europe is not in my radar because it never leaves it. But my perspective has changed and my desire to go is not as immediate as it once was.
In my summertime happenings, I made what I would call a five year bucket list. I made it for five years because I felt like it was attainable and long ones just seem too long. I like to see myself achieve things. In it I had put volunteer teaching. It was not a new idea for me, but the idea of doing it in South America was. A friend of mine had gone to South America the year before on a gap tour and it had sounded appealing. In my head I knew volunteering in Europe wasn't really an option. I did not want to go to Asia/Southeast Asia and Africa did not seem doable on my own. So there it was: South America. When I really started thinking about travelling last year in the dead of the winter months my heart went back to it.
I think a large contributing factor to the volunteering aspect of this trip is the people that I have surrounded myself with. I have friends who have volunteered in India, Nepal, and Kenya and when I hear them talk about their experiences I know that I can give back like that. I know that it has changed them. I want that. I want to make that difference. I always have. So I am looking forward to this trip and my new experiences in giving back. Do you have a bucket list with a time limit?
Or a favourite place you want to go/volunteer in?
